BARKHAMSTED -- The warning horns at the Metropolitan District Commission’s (MDC) Goodwin Dam Hydroelectric Powerhouse in Hartland and adjacent to the Grange Hall in the Riverton section of Barkhamsted will undergo routine tests and soundings on Thursday, November 6, commencing at 11 a.m. Several soundings may be necessary to test the system.

In an effort to increase community awareness and coordination with local emergency preparedness agencies, the system also will be sounded that evening at 7 p.m. These tests are part of the MDC’s annual emergency action plan drill. The drill is required by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for all hydroelectric power projects.

            The MDC regrets any inconvenience that the noise may cause area residents during the testing period. 

            A non-profit municipal corporation chartered by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1929, the MDC supplies water and sewer services to its eight member municipalities:  Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor.  The MDC supplies treated water to the Town of Portland and portions of Glastonbury, East Granby, South Windsor and Farmington. The MDC owns and operates two three-megawatt hydroelectric power stations, one at the Goodwin Dam in Hartland and one at the Cole­brook River Dam in Colebrook.
