MDC TO
SHUT PART OF TRANSMISSION MAIN TO REPAIR VALVE
EAST HARTFORD – The Metropolitan District Commission will shut down part of its Northeast Transmission Main today (June 9) to repair a crack in the top flange of a valve in East Hartford.
The shutdown is being done in the interest of safety while the repair is being made. During the shutdown, which is expected to last throughout the day, water service to customers and fire hydrants will be maintained by redirecting water from other water lines. However, some customers in South Windsor and the northern part of East Hartford may experience a slight reduction in water pressure.
The 24-inch pressure regulating valve controls the flow of water in the 36-inch Northeast Transmission Main, which carries water from the MDC’s Reservoir 6 Water Treatment Plant. During normal operating conditions, the valve automatically opens and closes to increase or decrease the flow of water as demand warrants.
A non-profit municipal corporation chartered by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1929, the MDC supplies water and sewer services to its eight member municipalities: Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor. The MDC also supplies treated water to the Town of Portland and portions of Glastonbury, East Granby, South Windsor and Farmington.
The MDC also operates two hydroelectric facilities and, under contract to the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority, the waste processing portion of the Mid-Connecticut trash-to-energy project. Information about the MDC can be found on its web site, www.themdc.com. The MDC is an equal opportunity employer.
