MDC Will Host NCCJ Community Conversations on Race Action Forum

HARTFORD (April 29, 2003) – The Metropolitan District Commission (MDC), in partnership with The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), will host NCCJ’s Community Conversations on Race Action Forum on Thursday, May 9, 2003 at the MDC Training Center, 125 Maxim Road in Hartford from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.  A light supper will be served.  Please R.S.V.P. by May 6th to Betsy Pigeon, NCCJ, (860) 683-1039 or e-mail bpigeon@nccj.org.

The purpose of this Action Forum is to reconvene conversation participants from the Fall 2002 and Winter/Spring 2003 sessions and give them the opportunity to share their experiences, develop action plans, and work together to improve race relations in their communities and/or workplace.  This event is also open to interested community activists and leaders.  Conversation participants meet once a week for five weeks to talk about their personal experiences with race, review public policies, and discuss ideas for implementing action.  MDC hosted two conversation groups this Winter 2003.

Since the first NCCJ Conversations on Race were launched in 1998, nearly 3000 individuals throughout the Greater Hartford region have participated in the dialogue sessions.  Conversations on Race is a program of The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), a human relations organization founded in 1927 and dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry and racism in America.  NCCJ promotes understanding and respect among all races, religions and cultures through advocacy, conflict resolution and education.  For more information on NCCJ’s programs in the Connecticut/Western Massachusetts region, visit the website www.nccjctwma.org.

A non-profit municipal corporation chartered by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1929, the MDC supplies water and sewer services to its eight member municipalities:  Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor.  The MDC also supplies treated water to portions of Glastonbury, East Granby, South Windsor, Farmington and Portland.  For more information, contact the MDC at 278-7850, ext. 3209.
