MDC Converting to Radio-Based
Meter ReadingHartford –The Metropolitan District (MDC) and its contractor, National Metering Services, Inc., are installing devices on water meters that use an advanced radio technology.
The radio transmitters will enable the MDC to read customers’ meters remotely with a hand-held computer. The program will involve the MDC’s 96,000 residential, commercial and industrial water customers.
Letters will be sent to customers prior to installation of the new transmitter.
A radio transmitter will be attached to their existing meter and once the transmitter is installed, the meter reader will be able to obtain a reading by walking or driving by the customer’s property.
This new system will help to improve MDC’s operating efficiencies while ensuring that customers receive accurate meter readings. It will not interfere with existing basic utility services.
Installations for residential and industrial customers are scheduled to be completed by 2009.
The MDC is a non-profit municipal corporation chartered by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1929. The MDC supplies water and sewer services to its eight member municipalities: Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor. The MDC also supplies treated water to the Town of Portland and portions of Glastonbury, East Granby, South Windsor and Farmington.
