ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES
AND NATURAL RESOURCES

The primary mission of the Metropolitan District is to provide safe pure drinking water and environmentally responsible sewage collection and treatment. In addition, the Metropolitan District serves as a steward for some of the most well preserved natural resources in the State of Connecticut.

In support of its mission the District's four water pollution control facilities treat wastewater from member towns. MDC collects and processes over 80 million gallons of combined sanitary and storm water and is actively pursuing combined sewer overflow (CSO) abatement within the City of Hartford.

Other responsibilities of the District include processing 860,000 tons of solid waste annually for the State’s Mid-Connecticut project, maintenance of the Connecticut River and shoreline as part of the Riverfront Recapture Project, and household hazardous waste collection.

Management of the municipal watershed and operation of two hydroelectric facilities that produce power for more than 3,000 homes are part of MDC's commitment to maintaining a strong natural environment. A comprehensive forestry program along with MDC's own logging crew is part of the management of the municipal watershed. The District maintains a demo forest as a living classroom to demonstrate forestry and its impact on people, wildlife and the environment. MDC also works closely with the State of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection Bald Eagle Study Group.
